PN 022506 -190 (03/14) CUSTOMER STORY Structure: Steenbras Lower Dam Type: Mass concrete Length: 415m Height: 28m Date: 1921 Capacity: 33,9 m cu m Overview The dam is located in the upper reaches of the mountains above Godons Bay, Cape Town, South Africa. The Upper Steenbras Dam stores water from its own catchment as well as water transferred by the Palmiet Pumped Storage Scheme. Water from the Upper Steenbras Dam can be released to the Lower Steenbras Dam or conveyed to the City of Cape Town's Faure Water Treatment Works via a 160 Megawatt Steenbras Pumped Storage Scheme and the City's Faure Pump Station. Water from the Lower Steenbras Dam is treated at the Steenbras Water Treatment Works and piped to Cape Town. Installation Description: The total station and sensor communication equipment is located in an Instrument Cabin with a clear overview of the dam wall. The server and software is located nearby in the dam office facility. The data is transferred to a second server located in the City of Cape Town using a satellite radio link due to difficulties in protecting the communication equipment from damage by the local baboon population. The system has been operating since 2012 and due to its proximity to the City of Cape Town, is also used as a training and demonstration facility for high end, automated dam monitoring installations.
