SiteVision Unlocks and Simplifies Workflows with Unrivaled Accuracy

Trimble’s recently-introduced SiteVision is a user-friendly outdoor augmented reality system that brings data to life for a variety of user groups and allows them to visualize and explore complex information with unrivaled accuracy. As noted in a recent Trimble blog post, SiteVision combines hardware and software in an integrated, lightweight handheld or pole-mounted solution.

“It’s easier to understand complex ideas when we can see them in context,” said Mark Nichols, Trimble Navigation general manager.

Following are examples of how users in a variety of applications are simplifying their workflows and seeing geospatial data in a real-world environment at a 1:1 scale – from property lines to underground services and more – through SiteVision.

Local Government Workflows

SiteVision is a streamlined solution allowing government offices to engage and collaborate efficiently with citizens, inspectors and other public stakeholders. What local government users like most about SiteVision is its ability to bring complex data to life. For example:

  • SiteVision will illustrate complex government database information as easily understood visualizations, allowing users to promptly identify and report issues for resolution.
  • Engage key stakeholders and the general public for project explanation and buy in.
  • Users can automatically place models on site and view fully textured models in 3D, plan view or cross-section.
  • This rugged, water-proof product will deliver real-time visualizations – such as locating services – following disasters, during public works project planning or while preserving a cultural site.

Cadastral Survey Workflows

Cadastral surveyors take pride in the accuracy and quality of their work and SiteVision is a key component to providing precise, reliable and high-quality workflows, including:

  • visualizing parcel boundaries in real time in the context of the field environment;
  • accurately locating buried monumentation;
  • monitoring site progress through clear visualizations; and
  • turning existing geospatial data into easy-to-understand 3D models complete with attributes for public and contractor engagement.
  • Utilities Workflows

Utility professionals use SiteVision to help all project stakeholders make more informed decisions, enhance customer engagement and accelerate the construction process to reduce costly errors and safety-related incidents. Crews and contractors in the field use SiteVision to illustrate what a design would look like once built, and/or what’s underneath the current design plans. These insights prompt conversations and revelations that eventually lead to a design that best meets all stakeholder objectives. Examples include:

  • For buried utility assets, SiteVision shows specific dimensions, attributes and locations of those assets prior to excavation work, making complex underground structures more understandable compared to traditional 2D viewing.
  • For utility corridor analysis, SiteVision presents the designs to key stakeholders in real surroundings to see and minimize possible conflict and clash with buildings, trees, right of ways, easements, property lines and other utility assets.
  • SiteVision supports other utility workflows to include lighting design and placement, vegetation management, damage assessment and right-of-way inspection.

Civil Construction Workflows

SiteVision plays a key role in all stages of the construction lifecycle: planning and initial visualization, checking progress and identifying issues during construction to reduce cost and time, completion and maintenance. Civil construction professionals are communicating and problem-solving in real time with SiteVision for these tasks:

  • communicating new designs
  • viewing all elements of the constructible model from subgrade to finished surface
  • comparing designs with the current site
  • performing inspections
  • determining construction productivity
  • calculating quick measurements on site including points, lines and cut/fill values

Building Construction Workflows

SiteVision takes BIM into the real world – and allows the surveyor to play a key role throughout the entire project duration – by providing project stakeholders with an enhanced 3D design review method for coordination, as well as vertical construction progress checking.

SiteVision allows:

  • MEP trades to view underground site utilities to tie into
  • concrete contractors to check formwork
  • steel contractors to ensure embeds are in place
  • architects to iterate designs and overlay them onsite
  • QA/QC workflows around a building
